The advantages of LED lighting devices make them particularly well-suited for many exhibit applications.
• White light LEDs emit no UV (ultraviolet) light, which degrades artifacts over time. They emit no IR (infrared) light, which can heat objects and add to their degradation.
• LED elements do not “burn out” like other light bulbs. Typical lifespan ratings are up to 100,000 hours. This translates to 11+ years of 24/7 operation, and longer when operated intermittently. So LED lighting devices can be treated as permanent fixtures. They can be embedded into exhibits where access to replace bulbs would be difficult.
• LEDs operate much cooler than incandescent or halogen lighting, reducing heat buildup damaging to artifacts. They are also more energy efficient, typically about 80% efficient, compared to 20% or less efficiency for incandescent or halogen.
• LEDs are low voltage devices. In most cases, the fixture-to-fixture wiring is done with low voltage 2 or 3 conductor cable. The power supplies plug directly into 120V receptacle outlets. This results in a much safer, easier, and often less expensive installation.
• LEDs are highly controllable. They can be dimmed, strobed, color-tuned, and can even change colors dynamically.
When evaluating the costs of using LED lighting devices for your application, don’t forget to consider the savings due to lower energy consumption, and lack of needed bulb replacements over the life of the installation. Also, the costs of installation wiring may be greatly reduced with low voltage wiring.
